Bandon Dunes has established itself as one of the finest, and most authentic, golf resorts in the country. It may soon have company. On the outskirts of Port Orford, Oregon, about 30 minutes south of the Bandon complex, a golf course is taking shape on a spectacular 330-acre parcel of land known as Knapp Ranch. Called Pacific Gales, the fledgling links is being developed by Jim Haley, a former Bandon shaper and now managing partner of Elk River Property Development. With a large natural dune running the length of the site, plus dramatic rocky cliffs, gorse-filled ravines, and groves of wind-twisted pines, the links—with construction slated to begin next year—was routed so that both nines finish at the edge of land and sea. Based on its natural attributes, Pacific Gales looks slated to take a place among the nation’s finest layouts, and further establish the southern Oregon coast as a must-play destination.
